Head Coach Kelly O'Connell is entering her 5th season at the helm of the Raider Basketball and Softball Programs. Coach O'Connell spent the last four seasons helping to build the foundation of what have become two of the premier programs in the GNAC (Great Northeast Athletic Conference) and in New England.
Basketball
In 2008-2009, the Women's Basketball team enjoyed a very successful 17-win season. This was the most wins by any team in program history. The Raiders qualified for the GNAC post season tournament for the third consecutive season and headed into tournament play as the 5th seed. Riv has several returning players along with a talented group of newcomers and will look to improve upon their success in 2009-2010.
Softball
After 2 consecutive 25-win seasons, the Raiders struggled putting runs across the plate in 2009 which resulted in a slightly disappointing 17-win season. Riv qualified for their 3rd consecutive GNAC post season tournament and advanced to the double-elimination portion of the tournament in as many tries. The highlight of the program was their 25-win season of 2008 in which they won the GNAC tournament, advanced to the NCAA Regional's and came home with the college's first-ever NCAA National Tournament victory. 2010 is the year the Raiders look to get back to the GNAC Championship game and hopefully bring back the title to Raider-land. Coach O'Connell was named the GNAC Coach-of-the Year in 2007.
Coach O'Connell was equally successful as a collegiate
player. She played for the Elms College Blazers for four
years. Coach O'Connell led her team to 2 MAIAW State Championships
(1 in basketball and 1 in softball) during her sophomore and junior
years and was named the basketball tournament's MVP after scoring
28 points and hauling down 8 rebounds in the title game. During her
career Coach O'Connell was named the ECAC Player of the Week on
numerous occasions. As a basketball player, she captained her squad
her junior and senior year and finished as a 1000 point scorer. In
softball, O'Connell served as a captain her senior year and
finished as a career .400 hitter.
