Poitras and Mellen Named November Student-Athletes of the Month
Jess Mellen and Don Poitras, two Raider basketball players, were named Student-Athlete of the month after their contributions both on the court and in the classroom.
As a junior captain and Business major on the men's basketball team, Don Poitras (Bow, NH) was named the Rivier College Male Student-Athlete of the Month for November after a great start to the 2009-2010 season. Poitras was an All-Tournament Selection at the All Metals Industries/Rivier College Tip-Off Tournament as he led the team to the championship game for the second straight year. Don scored a team high 23 points in a tough 81-80 loss against New England College in the final week of the month and is averaging 13.3 points per game and 4.7 rebounds per game while shooting 63% from the floor.
Jess Mellen (Rockland, MA) was named the Rivier College Female Student-Athlete of the Month for November. The senior captain and psychology major started off the season with three consecutive double-doubles and in 4 games played is averaging 15.5 points per game and 10.5 rebounds per game. Mellen's play earned her All-Tournament honors at the Mariner Invitational Tournament hosted by Maine Maritime Academy as well as GNAC (Great Northeast Athletic Conference) Player of the Week honors. Jess' greatest feat of the early part of the 2009-2010 season, however, was that she scored her 1000th career point against Plymouth State College in the second game of the season. Mellen is the second 1000 point scorer in the past 2 seasons for the Raiders and the first 4 year player to do it since 1998.
