Nashua, NH, Raider Field – The Rivier University Raiders (2 – 1, 1 – 0 GNAC) defeated the visiting Fitchburg State University Falcons (1 – 2, 0 – 0 MASCAC) 18 – 8 tonight in a non-conference matchup. Leading the way for the Raiders were Rebecca Wickens (Senior - Tyngsboro, MA) 5 goals, 1 assist, and 4 ground balls, Amanda Wickens (Freshman - Tyngsboro, MA) 4 goals, 2 assists, 4 ground balls, Elena Reilly (Sophomore - Braintree, MA) 3 goals, 2 assists, 4 ground balls, Jessica Amaral (Senior - E. Providence, RI) 2 goals, 1 assist, 2 ground balls, and Vanessa Viola (Senior - Nashua, NH) 1 goal, 5 ground balls.
The Raiders dominated the first half. The home team opened up a 3-0 lead with goals from Rebecca Wickens, Savannah Neuwirt (Junior - Newbury, NH), and Reilly. Fitchburg State got a goal back with a strike from Markie Apple (Senior – Pittsfield, MA). After that the Raiders rattled off eight unanswered goals to charge into halftime with an 11-1 lead. The Wickens sisters propelled the attack with Rebecca striking for three goals and Amanda chipping in two, the pair punching in five of the eight goal barrage. Danielle Moran (Sophomore - San Diego, CA) turned away ten Falcon shots in goal for the Raiders to help open up the commanding lead.
Amanda Wickens struck again to open the second half and push the Raiders ahead 12-1. Fitchburg State tried to regroup with a three goal run on tallies from Apple, Lindsay White (Junior – Hanover, MA), and Erin Murphy (Senior, Warwick, RI) to nip at the hosts 12-4. Rivier answered with a six goal run of their own with two strikes from Reilly, and single strikes from Amanda and Rebecca Wickens, Viola, and Paxton LaRocque (Sophomore - Londonderry, NH) to put the game out of reach at 18-4 with 11:29 to play. The visiting Falcons showed some scrap, closing the game out with four goals, but the tide had already rolled for the 18-8 final. Moran finished with 12 saves for the Raiders. She turned in a number of important stops that allowed Rivier to carry momentum and steadily build their lead. Elizabeth Darrigo (Sophomore – Billerica, MA) made 9 saves for the Falcons.
The Raiders return to action this Saturday the 22with an away tilt versus Mt Ida in a GNAC Conference game. Next up for Fitchburg State is a road game on Tuesday the 25at Becker College. thnd
